Hanfu

Monday 01/07: Hanfu

Hanfu, known as "汉服" (hĂ n fĂș) in Chinese, is the traditional attire of the Han Chinese people. With a history spanning over 4,000 years, it embodies the cultural heritage and aesthetics of Ancient China. Characterised by flowing robes, wide sleeves and intricate designs, Hanfu is often made from silk and other fine fabrics, showcasing elaborate patterns and vibrant colours.

Chinese painting

Tuesday 02/07: Chinese painting

Chinese painting, known as "ć›œç”»" (guĂł huĂ ) in Chinese, is a traditional form of visual art that has evolved over thousands of years. It is characterised by the use of brush and ink on paper or silk, and it often incorporates traditional themes such as landscapes, flowers, birds and figures.

Lacquer fans

Wednesday 03/07: Lacquer fans

Lacquer fans, known as "挆扇" (qÄ« shĂ n) in Chinese, are traditional Chinese artefacts that combine the art of fan-making with the intricate technique of lacquerware. Lacquer fans are made using a meticulous process that involves applying multiple layers of lacquer – a natural varnish derived from the sap of the lacquer tree – onto the fan’s surface. The fan frames are typically crafted from high-quality materials such as bamboo or wood, ensuring sturdiness and elegance. The designs on lacquer fans often feature intricate patterns, traditional Chinese motifs and elaborate paintings that can include landscapes, flowers, birds and scenes from classical literature.

Dragon dance

Thursday 04/07: Dragon dance

Dragon dance, known as "舞韙" (wǔ lĂłng) in Chinese, is a traditional Chinese performance art that has been an integral part of Chinese culture for centuries. This vibrant and dynamic dance is performed during various festivities, especially during Chinese New Year and other significant celebrations. The origins of the dragon dance date back to Ancient China, where it was believed to bring good luck and prosperity and to ward off evil spirits. Dragons are considered auspicious and powerful creatures in Chinese mythology, symbolising strength, dignity, fertility and wisdom.

Calligraphy

Friday 05/07: Calligraphy

Calligraphy, known as "äčŠæł•" (shĆ« fǎ) in Chinese, is a revered form of visual art in China that involves writing Chinese characters with a brush and ink. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, it is not only a means of communication but also a profound artistic expression that reflects the writer’s emotions, thoughts and personality. The rhythm, flow and composition of the strokes are crucial elements that convey the artist’s inner feelings and state of mind. Each piece of calligraphy is a unique work of art, showcasing the calligrapher’s skill and creativity.
