Chinese Cinema Cycle

The Confucius Institute is organising its monthly Chinese Cinema Cycle in partnership with the Cercle Cité. This is a unique opportunity to discover Chinese films and documentaries (with English and/or French subtitles). The Confucius Institute worked with the Allers-Retours Association to select the films.
Come along on Tuesday 17 October 2023 from 17:30 (start at 18:00) for the screening of the film “Manchurian Tiger” (English subtitles).

Truck driver Xu Dong has to send his beloved dog away when his pregnant wife, Meiling, approaches her due date. By coincidence, Ma Qianli, a real estate developer heavily in debt, now becomes the new dog owner. When later confronted by debt collectors, Ma has to cook the dog to treat them. The death of the dog turns the two frustrated men into foes. Xu seeks vengeance with rage though after several failed attempts, and he finds himself sympathising with Ma’s plight and feeling impossible to carry on with the plan. Meanwhile, Meiling finds out about Xu’s love affair.

Le chauffeur routier Xu Dong doit se séparer de son chien bien-aimé lorsque sa femme enceinte, Meiling, approche de la date prévue pour l'accouchement. Par coïncidence, Ma Qianli, un promoteur immobilier lourdement endetté, devient le nouveau propriétaire du chien. Lorsqu'il est confronté à des agents de recouvrement, Ma de cuire le chien pour les accueillir. La mort du chien transforme les deux hommes frustrés en ennemis. Xu cherche à se venger avec rage, mais après plusieurs tentatives infructueuses, il commence à compatir à la détresse de Ma et à se sentir incapable de poursuivre son plan. Pendant ce temps, Meiling découvre la liaison amoureuse de Xu.
