“Interpreting China” from an outside perspective necessitates knowledge of China´s history, especially its cultural history, and its historical experiences with the outside world. The concept of the “New Silk Road” combined economic, political, cultural aspects on a national and international level. It is up to discussion whether there is an elaborated strategic masterplan behind, or if it is more a “try and error” experiment. Or a combination of both.

Prof. Dr. Richard Trappl Sinologist, Austrian Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna.
