Fifth Conference on Chinese Language and Culture

To create a platform for high-quality research and share concepts related to Chinese language teaching, the Confucius Institute at the University of Luxembourg drawing upon the resources of the University of Luxembourg and its partner university, Fudan University, held its fifth Conference on Chinese Language and Culture on 24 September 2022. Around 20 people involved in language didactics, and more specifically in teaching Chinese as a foreign language in Luxembourg were present.

First, two experts from Fudan University, Prof. Wang Xiaoman and Prof. Ji Xiaojing, respectively gave a presentation focusing on new multimodal communication practices and methods used by learners in multilingual contexts and how to organise a Chinese class oriented by ability training of students.

In second part, two experts from the University of Luxembourg, Prof. Eve Lejot and Dr. Marion Krames, gave as well a presentation focusing on incorporating media into teaching strategies and on the potential offered by the hybrid nature of devices and digital tools. They illustrated this potential by giving an example of how to tdevelop text production competence in Chinese as a foreign language in a motivating way using the content management system Moodle.

Finally, all the teachers present, were welcome to come along and share their experiences to enhance teaching methods and optimise student engagement.

All the participants found the presentations and subsequent discussions very helpful. In this way, the Confucius Institute serves as a platform for a high quality conference every year to promote the further development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language not only in Luxembourg, but also beyond.
