Zhu Wei

Dr. ZHU Wei, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Luxembourg, is a scholar and professor of bioethics at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Her research interest covers areas ranging from informed consent, social justice, human rights and genetic ethics to research oversight in low and middle income nations. In January 2018, she was selected as the fellow of the Hastings Center, the U.S.A.

Over the years, Dr. Zhu has published more than 30 academic papers, and 1 monograph on informed consent. Besides, she has also co-authored and translated several other books when entering the 21st century. She is the PI and Co-PI of several major research projects funded by the National Social Sciences Fund of China, the Shanghai Social Sciences Fund, the Ministry of Health of China, Harvard China Fund, and Fogerty Foundation NIH. She served as a Fellow in Research Ethics at Harvard School of Public Health from 2002 to 2004.

As part of her work, Dr. Zhu has proposed policy recommendations to the Chinese government on issues regarding anti-discrimination based on genome, prevention and treatment of drug dependence and addiction, ethical guidelines on human adult stem cell research and its clinical translation, and etc. She is also the reviewer for NIH international research ethics program and the journal of Developing World Bioethics.

Dr. Zhu is an active participant in international academic exchange and cooperation in the field of bioethics and health care promotion. She has long-term cooperation with scholars from institutions in Germany, the U.S., Canada, Singapore and New Zealand. In the past years, she has been invited to various international and regional conferences, and has organized some international symposiums and workshops on bioethics-related topics in China.

While being active in the field of bioethics study, like serving as the member of the Asian Bioethics Association and as the Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Chinese Society for Bioethics, Dr. Zhu also acts as the Chairperson of the Independent Ethics Committee, Shanghai Clinical Research Center, the Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee, Chinese National Human Genome Center at Shanghai and the Ethics Committee of the Life Sciences of Fudan University,  and the IRB member of several key hospitals in Shanghai.
